PLANO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA EXPANDS MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAM WITH SUMMER CAMPS FOCUSED ON MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA STUDENTS

PLANO, TX (March 16, 2023): The Plano Symphony Orchestra (PSO) is delighted to offer two new summer camps to help students fine tune their skills by learning from some of the very talented musicians of the PSO. The camps help foster the symphony’s mission to inspire, educate, and involve the youth of the community. The camps are open to Strings, Winds, Brass, Percussionandwill be held July 10-21 (grades 9-12) and July 10-14 (grades 7-9) and take place in Plano at Christ United Methodist Church. Auditions are required and are now being accepted at planosymphony.org/summer-camp.

Dr. Jennifer Wheeler, PSO’s Director of Education states, “With our School Concert Program and our Family Concert Series targeting elementary-aged students, we wanted to develop a program to support the musical growth of middle and high school musicians in our community. This summer camp will do just that.”

“PSO’s Summer Music Camp initiative is one of many new and exciting programs that will advance our five-year strategic growth plan which is designed to bring the joy of live music to many more communities in North Texas,” said Executive Director Gregory Patterson. “The PSO is making significant inroads in touching the lives of thousands more Texans through programs such as this as we focus boldly on our mission of enhance the lives of as many people as possible through the enjoyment of great music.”

Nancy Freeman, a PSO Board member and one of the sponsors of the new program added, “I am happy to support such an innovative addition to our education programming. The inclusion of Associate Conductor Shira Samuels-Shragg adds an additional element to the uniqueness of this program.”

About the PSO Summer Camps:

HIGH SCHOOL (Grades 9-12)

July 10-21 Monday-Friday 1-5 PM

Final concert July 21 at 6 PM

Tuition $200

MIDDLE SCHOOL (Grades 7-9)

July 10-14 9 AM-12 PM

Final concert July 14 at 6 PM

Tuition $100

Additional Classes include Chamber Music; Electives such as film music, improvisation, conduction; Private lessons with PSO musicians (for additional charge).

Early Audition deadline is March 31 with the regular audition deadline of May 26. Early admission students will be notified by April 7.

Students will receive two free tickets to the Plano Symphony Orchestra Concert featuring conductor Shira Samuels-Shragg on July 15 at 7 PM.
