School Education Program

Send me to the Symphony!

The Plano Symphony Orchestra's Symphony Sampler Concert program was created over 25 years ago through a unique collaboration between the Symphony leadership and Plano ISD Fine Arts Department to be an integral part of the fine arts curriculum for elementary school students. These performances have provided students with opportunities to experience the art form and introduce children of the digital age to the magic of live musical enrichment. The ongoing partnership between the Plano Symphony Orchestra and Plano ISD has been an invaluable resource for the PISD music program touching thousands of students over the years.

As a result of the current state of public education funding in Texas, PlanoISD was forced to make difficult decisions. In an attempt to live within the limited means, many budget items were cut for the 2011-12 school year, including the Fine Arts Series that has been a feature of the Plano elementary fine arts curriculum for many years.

With a donation of $200, this live performance opportunity and associated classroom learning experiences will continue for a classroom of students. A donation of $1,000 will make this opportunity available to an entire elementary school including five 4th grade classes. Your donation includes tickets to attend one of the Symphony performances and feedback from the student(s) on their concert experience.

In 2008, the program received an Arts Education Award nomination from Art Centre of Plano "For the Love of Arts" for outstanding education in the arts.

The Plano Symphony Orchestra is in its 30th season of bringing orchestral music to the North Texas area with a mission to inspire, educate, entertain and involve the children, youth and adults of our community in the enjoyment of great music.

2012 SCHOOL CONCERTS AT
CHARLES W. EISEMANN CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTS

From Melisa Feledichuk with Huffman Elementary:
"On behalf of Huffman Elementary, I want to thank you and the Plano Symphony Orchestra for continuing to provide an outstanding musical experience for our 4th grade students! Year after year I'm amazed at the quality of training you offer at our teacher inservice; as well as the resources that you make available to us to take back into the classrooms. My students thoroughly enjoy the powerpoint presentations and the musical excerpts you provide in order to make this a truly meaningful experience! The docent visits have also been very interesting and entertaining. I love watching their expressions when they hear a live musician perform; and to see their curiosity in play with all the questions they have about the instrument. But most of all I enjoy seeing the "connection" that they feel they have with the orchestra during the concert, because one of its members has been to visit them!"

From Allyson Garnand, with SAIL Homeschoolers:
"This was a wonderful experience! One thing that I really appreciated about the musician visit is the kids being able to ask questions. I also loved hearing from a professional musician about starting out as a kid, learning to play the piano first then on to other instruments."

From Kathy Kuddes, Director of Fine Arts, Plano ISD:
"The ongoing partnership between the Plano Symphony and Plano ISD has been an invaluable resource for our music program and our students over the years. As our student population changes we think experiences like this one are beyond value. We feel fortunate to have a symphony organization that is so willing to work closely with us on curricular issues and so responsive to feedback from our instructional staff. The thoughtful and timely preparation and presentation of the teacher resource materials allow teachers to plan rigorous and repeated lessons that make the repertoire truly familiar to our students."
